New Delhi: The common turmeric found in our kitchens has paved the way for making efficient fuel cells and batteries.

When the Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning and Clemson Nanomaterial Institute (CNI) in India combined curcumin, a component of turmeric, with gold nanoparticles, they made an electrode from it that could rapidly convert ethanol into electricity. Converts and takes 100 degrees less energy than conventional methods.

This significant development has brought the hydrogen fuel cell closer to its destination, but further research is needed for commercial production. Among the catalysts required for the oxidation of alcohol, curcumin nanoparticles have proved to be the most effective, said Dr. Aparu Rao, head of CNI.
We know that fuel cells, such as hydrogen, generate electricity through chemical reactions instead of combustion. It is mainly used to make cars, other devices and backup power systems. In this list, hydrogen fuel cells have proven to be low cost and environmentally friendly.

Hydrogen is found naturally in the form of a compound and is therefore derived from natural gas and fuel. Now the cost of making hydrogen by traditional methods is paid in terms of environmental impact.

Then filling the cylinder with hydrogen is no less of a challenge. In contrast, it is easier to extract hydrogen from corn, sugarcane, and other commodities, such as ethanol, a type of alcohol, because it produces liquid hydrogen. But it is also important that we have electrodes (electrodes) very effective and the best role of turmeric has come to the fore. These electrodes are low cost and environmentally friendly.

Platinum has also been used in electronics before, but it causes toxic compounds during oxidation throughout the process and in a way produces carbon monoxide. Now the chemical curcumin of turmeric has been added to very fine gold particles and it has proved to be an excellent electrode. In the process, an electron is made from nanoparticles and a sheet of curcumin is applied to it.

It is hoped that this low-cost process will lead to the creation of environmentally friendly and inexpensive fuel cells. On the other hand, in addition to fuel cells, they can also be used to make sensitive sensors that can be helpful in medical use. In one experiment, it was used to successfully test for dopamine deficiency in the brain.
